Adult Sailing Classes
The aim of our Adult Sailing Program is to have as many members of the Club as we can know how to sail and enjoy themselves on the water, whether racing, helping therewith or just going for a day’s sail.
After a successful year last summer – two participants have gone ahead and purchased Sandpipers – we are going to continue with more or less the same format. We are, however, going to add a bit of learning about racing for these new Sandpiper owners and anyone else who would like to brush up in that area.
We will continue to offer a course in basic sailing as follows:
- Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:30 or 6:00 PM. This will primarily be in Sandpipers with an instructor on board, but for those who have progressed enough to be able to be in a boat without an instructor on board and want to learn about sailing a boat with a jib and maybe about spinnakers, we will have you go out in the Club’s Blue Jays or perhaps 420’s, followed by a coach in a launch. This could also lead into the racing class. Note that Friday afternoon sessions will not start until July 8th.
- A 3-day concentrated course for those who cannot commit to coming out on Friday afternoons. This, hopefully, will get you familiar with what sailing is all about and all those baffling terms you hear bandied about. If you get hooked – and we hope you do – you can continue in the Friday classes. This year we have moved it to the week of the 4th of July in hopes that will be more convenient for those who might like to participate. Tuesday, July 5th through Thursday, July 7th, 9 AM to 3 PM, lunch included.
The racing instruction will take place at the same time as the basic course – 3 to 5:30 or 6:00 PM on Friday afternoons. I have invited the rest of the Sandpiper Fleet to participate in theses sessions as instructors or as participants.
Needless to say these sessions are not in any fixed format. We will adapt them to the skill of the participants and as always the weather of the day. To that end so that we can plan for instructors, boats etc., please sign up by June 11th for whichever phase you are interested in by sending in the coupon below. Call me if you have any questions.
There will be a charge of $50 for the 3-day course to cover the cost of the lunches and a charge of $75 for the Friday afternoons to cover the cost of running the launches etc
